The Perfection of the World Outside

Part of why I am not blogging much lately is that the world outside my door is so devastatingly perfect right now. The weather is fabulous - sunny, dry, seventy degrees. When it is a bit cool, the sun shines on my back deck and it feels heavenly. Everything smells great.

We have more or less finished our back yard terracing project and are now just tending all the little plants we have installed. All my wildflower and native grass seeds are up and turning into cute little plants. Many of the larger plants are in bloom - mexican mint marigold, scarlet sage, lantana, and copper canyon daisy.

My husband has been clearing out little juniper trees beyond the garden area. This opens up the view a little and makes all the other interesting plants more visible. We've also blazed a trail to the back of our lot - 500 feet beyond our house. This has been really fun. Our ravine is so beautiful - a series of travertine and limestone waterfalls under the canopy of big oaks and juniper trees. We can now easily go down there any time. I feel twelve years old when I am down there, like my husband and I are two children playing together in the woods. We've been working on the trail making it easy to negotiate. At some point, I will plant some shade loving native plants along the way. Right now, there are a fair number of nolinas, yuccas, sages, and yaupon hollies along the way. But I will add some columbine, turk's cap and cedar sage as well.

When we bought the house, I suspected that the land would give us a lot of pleasure, but it has far exceeded my expectations. The sensory experience of just being in my own back yard is something I just cannot get too much of.

OMG! I am definitely going to come for a visit one day. Your place sounds amazing. I also feel spiritually uplifted when in the presence of natural beauty, so really relate to any posts you have written on the topic. MoMR :-)

or what the hell, let's just sing it all togehter at the beginning of the change and see what changes then, the song is always about the present anyway...

"The Times They Are A-Changin'"

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.
